Kawasaki Announces Its First Ten Green Products with ISO 14021-compliant Environmental Label

Tokyo, June 2, 2014 — Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. announced today that it is set to launch a new program to assess and register its products with outstanding environmental performance as Kawasaki Green Products and make a list of those products public. Ten products have been chosen to be on the first list of Kawasaki Green Products. These include nine Kawasaki Super Green Products boasting the highest level environmental performance in the industry. All registered products get an environmental label that is compliant with ISO 14021:1999 (Environmental labels and declarations- Self-declared environmental claims (TypeⅡ environmental labelling), an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization.

Kawasaki looks at its products from various angles to assess their overall environmental performance prior to labelling them as Kawasaki Green Products. To be selected as a Kawasaki Green Product, a product must meet all the criteria developed by Kawasaki for environmental performance as well as environmental management during the manufacturing processes. These criteria focus on the three key-areas crucial to global environmental sustainability: reduction of carbon emissions, recycling, and coexistence with nature. There are two categories according to environmental contribution levels. Products that demonstrate higher environmental performance than the industry standard or Kawasaki's pre-existing models are labelled Kawasaki Green Products while those that have the most outstanding environmental features in the industry are labelled Kawasaki Super Green Products.

ISO 14021 specifies 18 requirements for environmental claims shown on an environmental label, including eliminating vague claims as well as disclosing information necessary to verify any environmental claims. This standard adds an objective perspective to the selection of Kawasaki Green Products. Kawasaki plans to evaluate its products under this program and announce its Kawasaki Green Products on an annual basis.

Just like its Group mission states, “Kawasaki, working as one for the good of the planet." As a global technology leader with diverse integrated strengths, Kawasaki is committed to creating new value for a better environment and a brighter future for generations to come. This new program is being implemented as part of Kawasaki's key initiatives aimed at fulfilling its mission. Kawasaki will leverage the program to boost the competitive edge of its environmentally sustainable products as well as to fulfil its corporate social responsibility.

About the Logo and the labels

The logo is designed to promote the activity contributing to global environmental sustainability. The labels are used exclusively for the products that have passed the assessing process. The program logo embodies Kawasaki's commitment to support the global environmental sustainability through products and manufacturing. The three pillars in the logo represent Kawasaki's primary business operations related to land, sea and air transport systems, energy and environmental engineering, as well as industrial equipment. Kawasaki's innovative and advanced technological capabilities in these respective areas form a firm foundation for these pillars, which together support the global environment. Compliant with ISO 14021, the environmental labels include a brief product description. These logos will be used for products, brochures, etc.

Battery Power System (BPS)

<Rolling Stock Company>

Super Green

Innovative high-performance, energy-efficient battery that does not emit radio frequency noise

Boasting excellent energy efficiency, the BPS employs the GIGACELL® to help reduce CO2 emissions. It does not emit radio frequency noise that affects railway signalling systems, etc. due to electromagnetic induction.

Kawasaki BK117C-2 Helicopter

< Aerospace Company>

Super Green

The world's most quiet helicopter

The BK117C-2 was rated 6.7 EPNdbB (about 50%) below the external noise standard set under Japan's Civil Aeronautics Act, making it one of the world's most quiet helicopter in its class.

M1A-17D Gas Turbine

<Gas Turbine Division>

Super Green

Highest level of efficiency in its class with the lowest NOx emissions made possible by Kawasaki's integrated technological capability

With improved electrical efficiency (2.4% higher than the previous model), the M1A-17D is the most efficient gas turbine in its class and has the industry's lowest level of NOx emissions at 35 ppm (converted at 0% O2).

Green Gas Engine

<Machinery Division>

Super Green

The world's highest electrical efficiency in its class

The Green Gas Engine boasts the world's highest power generation efficiency at 49.5% by applying its variable turbine area (VTA) turbocharger and newly developed lubricant in addition to optimized combustion performance.

MAG Turbo

<Machinery Division>

Super Green

Industry's highest level efficiency and low environmental impact achieved via the use of magnetic bearings

Developing a high-speed motor fitted with magnetic bearings, the MAG Turbo outperforms existing models of sewage aeration blowers in overall efficiency throughout the air volume range. Furthermore, the MAG Turbo does not require the use of lubricant, minimizing environmental impact.

Centrifugal Chiller Using Water as Refrigerant

<Machinery Division>

Super Green

Epoch-making CFC-free, high-efficiency chiller cuts greenhouse gas emissions

This CFC-free chiller, using water as refrigerant, delivers efficiency comparable to existing chiller models. Its compact design makes it a viable alternative to existing chillers.

CKK System

<Plant & Infrastructure Company>

Super Green

Saving energy and resources via effective use of waste

The CKK System incorporates a waste incinerator into existing cement plants, requiring 70% fewer components compared with installing a waste incinerator alone. It effectively uses thermal energy and ash generated from waste incineration to reduce CO2 emissions.

Ninja ZX-6R

<Motorcycle & Engine company>

Green

New model revamped for lower CO2 emissions and enhanced recyclability

Starting with the 2009 model, the Ninja ZX-6R's displacement was increased by 37 cm3 for a greater output while fuel consumption was reduced by 3%. It is also designed for better environmental performance, like enhanced recyclability.

Hydraulic Pump for Excavators (K7V)

<Precision Machinery Company>

Super Green

The world's leading environmental performer with higher efficiency and less noise

The K7V's pump efficiency was improved by 1.5 points and its noise level reduced by 3 dB (A) compared with the K3V series, its widely popular predecessor, to make it one of the world's top environmental performers.

Spot Welding Robot

BX200L SE22

<Robot Division>

Super Green

Industry's lightest weight, slimmest, and most compact spot welding robot minimizes the footprint for production lines

The BX200L SE22 has a smaller footprint and is more lightweight than any comparable model in the industry. Since cables and hoses can be stored in the robot's arm, interference with adjacent robots or peripheral devices is minimized. This allows for installation in higher-density applications compared to conventional models.
